Mount Abu is the only hill station located in the state of Rajasthan.
It is known as the 'Oasis of the desert' due to the presence of a number
of lakes, rivers, waterfalls and lush green forests. The town is located
on the highest peak of Aravalli Range in the state. Situated in the
Sirodhi district the mountain forms a rocky plateau. All these facts
have made Mount Abu a popular retreat for the natives of the state as
well that of the neighboring states. The town provides respite from the
scorching heat of the sun during the summer months.
Mount Abu has an interesting historical past. In the texts of Puranas,
the region has been referred to as Arbudaranya, ("forest of Arbhu"),
the short form of which is 'Abu'. According to Hindu mythology, sage
Vasishtha retired to Mount Abu, after his differences with sage
Vishvamitra. Moreover, the town once formed a part of the Chauhan
kingdom and served as the summer resort for the regional Rajput Kings.
Following this, it was taken on lease by the British and used as
headquarter of Rajputana and even the sanatorium for the troops.
During the British rule in India, it was one of the most preferred
holiday destinations, especially for those deployed in Rajasthan. Apart
from this, Mount Abu is also considered a holy town due to various
reasons. It is taken in high regard by Jains as the famous Dilwara
Temples are situated here. It is also believed that the 24th Tirthankar
of Jain religion, Lord Mahavira blessed the city. Today, the city offers
a plethora of activities to be enjoyed by the visitors such as
interesting sightseeing, scenic environs and an array of Rajasthani art
and craft souvenirs.
